Association Awards Program

The Association for Great Lakes Maritime History’s Awards Program recognizes excellence in Great Lakes maritime history research, interpretation and preservation. The Association currently sponsors four awards which are presented in September during its Annual Maritime History Conference.

Henry N. Barkhausen Award for Original Research in Great Lakes Maritime History
– named for one of the founders of the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History, this award recognizes new research in the field of Great Lakes maritime history by both professional and avocational historians. Click here for paper submission and judging guidelines.

Joyce S. Hayward Award for Historic Interpretation
– name for a tireless advocate for Great Lakes shipwreck research and long-time member of the Association, this award is presented to an individual who has made a major contribution, over many years, to the interpretation of Great Lakes maritime history, in furtherance of the goals of the Association. C. Patrick Labadie Award for Historic Preservation
– named for a renowned Great Lakes maritime historian and long-time member of the Association, this award is presented to an individual who has made a major contribution, over many years, to the preservation of Great Lakes maritime history, in furtherance of the goals of the Association. Dr. Charles E. Feltner and Jeri Baron Feltner AGLMH Conference Scholarship
An award of $250 will be awarded to facilitate participation in the Annual AGLMH Conference and Awards Dinner in September. Applicants must be students currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program., with a professional interest in Great Lakes maritime history.  Click here for more details.

The President’s Award
Since 2015, this award has honored individuals whose many years of dedication and service to the Association has made it possible for us to grow and prosper as a leading advocate for maritime history preservation, interpretation and research for more than 30 years.
